What grades is the book study for?

Our hosts have taught a variety of age levels including childcare, preschool, pre-k, kindergarten, and first grade. If you work with young children in any capacity the book study will be of interest and value to you.

Is it too late to join?

The beauty of an on-line book study is that you can read the posts at your convenience, so it’s never too late to join.

What book are you reading?

Instead of just one book, we will read and discuss different types of challenging behaviors. Because there is no one size fits all approach to addressing challenging behaviors in the classroom, each of our hosts will be discussing a particular behavior in their posts and referenced and supported by a book.

Hopefully this approach will help those of you looking for answers to some of your most urgent questions regarding challenging behaviors. If you read a post that really resonates with you and you would like to learn more about that particular strategy then you can get more information from the book listed in the post.

What is the cost to participate?

The discussion is free! You can find the books at your local library or you can purchase them if you prefer.

If you would like to earn graduate credit for your participation you can do so, just scroll down to the graduate credit section for the details.

Which challenging behaviors will you be discussing?

  • Resolving and Managing Conflict
  • How to Handle Tattling
  • Sharing and Taking Turns
  • Getting Kids to Pay Attention
  • Self-Regulation
  • How to Make Friends
  • How to Make Good Choices
  • Establishing Teacher-Child Relationships
  • Separation Anxiety
  • And more!

How do I follow the discussions?

I have listed the blogs that will be hosting each discussion for you below. Simply follow each blog so you will be notified each time a new discussion is posted. To follow a blog means to subscribe or sign up to receive e-mail updates by entering your name and e-mail in the space provided on each blog.

You can also follow blogs through a feed reader such as feedly.

Karen at Prekinders created this handy book study guide that will be updated with each new post.

Once you are following each blog you can read the book discussion posts at your convenience. To participate in the discussions, simply post your questions or comments directly on each blog post.

Linky tutorial

What is a linky?

Each of the posts will also be linked up to the linky. The linky helps keep the book discussion posts organized and available at the bottom of each post for your convenience.

If you are a blogger, you are invited to write and post a response to each discussion on your own blog and then link up using the linky tool. The purpose of a linky is to invite others to share their ideas freely. However, there is no need to have your own blog to participate in the book study.

I created a linky tutorial for bloggers who would like more information on how a linky works.

  1. ghana runs mainstreaming and my question is a child having both sight and hearing problem and always disturbing during instructional hours, how do you handle such a child.

    1. Hi! The book listed above titled Challenging Behavior in Young Children: Understanding, Preventing, and Responding Effectively has information specifically for students with special needs. When it comes to children with special needs it is important that the teacher, staff, school specialists, and parents work together to best meet the needs of the particular child. A teacher is only one person on the team and cannot work in isolation to meet the needs of students with special needs.

        1. Hi Yussif, you can click on the link to the book in the post above and purchase the book in Kindle or paperback from Amazon or you can check your local library to see if they have a copy.

  5. HI, I have been following the discussions and I find all the informations shared very helpful.

Would I be able to print the participation certificate at a later stage as I will be traveling on 1 August and will not have access to the internet/printer?

    Thanks

    1. Hi Elsa, Yes, you may print the certificate at any time. The book study will “live” on the Internet indefinitely so anybody can follow along, join the discussion and participate at any time- now and in the future. Just follow my blog so you can receive an e-mail update when the certificate is published.

  6. Regarding separation anxiety: “Those parents or caregivers who stayed in the classroom for a few minutes, talked to the teacher, and talked positively about school had children who were active and responded well to being separated.”
For those children who are already displaying separation anxiety when mom brings them to the class, we (our pre-k teachers) find it better for the parent to leave quickly. Some children will settle down soon after mom is gone, but if she is there, the child will cling and the behavior will escalate into a tantrum.

    1. Hi Cathy, I think the quote is taken out of context. If a parent is happy and chatty with the teacher upon arrival then their child is most likely not already throwing a fit. I think the authors were referring to those parents who were relaxed and happy upon arriving in the classroom with their child. These parents are most likely those who have already discussed school at home with their child in positive and conversational ways. I agree, if a child is already experiencing separation anxiety upon entering the classroom that is a red flag that the parent has not prepared them well or has inadvertently scared them. See my comments on the Separation Anxiety post here for more details: https://www.pre-kpages.com/separation-anxiety-in-preschool/

  9. Hi Vanessa. Where can I find the Certificate of Participation?

I have really enjoyed this book study and have learned so much. I now have many ideas to implement when school begins in a few weeks. Thanks to you, and all the other authors, who made this study possible!

    Thanks so much!
    Eileen
