Craig's List is one of the easiest and best ways to get the ultimate bargains for your classroom.

bullet What is Craig's List?
bullet From Wikipedia:  Craig's List is a centralized network of online urban communities, featuring free classified advertisements (with everything from jobs, internships, housing, personals, for sale/barter/wanted, services, community, resume, and pets categories).

What's so great about Craig's List?

Every teacher loves a bargain and Craig's List is a giant local garage sale.  The best thing about Craig's List is that it is local so there are no shipping fees and complicated bidding strategies, everything is arranged between you and the seller and you pick it up locally.  Here are only a few of my lucky Craig's List finds:

bullet Getting Started:
bullet Getting started on Craig's List is really very simple, it's just a matter of visiting the website.
bullet Go to www.craigslist.org
bullet You can type in the search box for specific items or search the broad range of categories.
bullet I have had luck searching for classroom items in the following categories: baby & kids, games & toys, garage sales, and books.

bullet I found something I want, what do I do now?
bullet Click on the highlighted numbers at the top of the listing, this will take you to your e-mail program.  Simply type the seller an e-mail inquiring about the item, ask if it's still available.  The seller will e-mail you if it's still available and you can go on from there to discuss payment, location, and pick-up.

bullet Garage Sales:
bullet Some of my best finds have been in the garage sale category.  I have spent much of this summer ('07) going to local teacher garage sales.  I have been to one each weekend for 5 weeks straight.  Each one was better than the last!

bullet

Wanted

bullet

There is a wanted section on Craig's List so if there is something in particular you are looking for you can post it there.  This section can get quite tedious though so don't expect much from it.  There's always a long list of people begging for money or cars so your request for classroom items is likely to be ignored.  If you're looking for absolutely free items your best bet is Freecycle.

bullet

Is it safe?

bullet

When picking up items from sellers houses (with the exception of garage sales) it is always best to go with somebody just to be on the safe side.

bullet

How do I pay?

bullet

That is between you and the seller.  Many sellers, myself included, on ly accept cash.
