I created this very brief video above to show you how to add text to a PDF document. I receive this question often, especially during this time of year when teachers are busy preparing their Parent Communication Notebooks and Dramatic Play Centers.
Adding text to a PDF document is really quite easy, just follow these simple steps and you will be able to customize your documents to meet your needs. This is a tutorial for adding text to blank fields, not editing already existing text. I’ll let you know as soon as I have a tutorial for that one.

Thanks for this tutorial!
So handy.

Thank you so much for this.
Thank you so much! I have a Mac so my pdf didn’t open in Adobe, it opened in Preview but thanks to you, I was able to find the way to add text! I didn’t think you could! But it was easy and now I can use the cute nametags I found. (You click a little pencil called the Annotations Toolbar and then click on the Aa to add text. So simple!) Thanks!
Thanks for sharing the Mac instructions Laura, I know they will come in handy for a lot of visitors.
This is great! I’ve kinda played around with adding text to pdf’s before, but really never could get it just right. Thanks to you, now I can. Do you have these directions written somewhere on here? I would like to print them out if so, and keep very close when I am working on my computer? Thanks! Please email me – pks0221@suddenlink.net
Thanks,
Pam
I must be the only one having trouble getting out of the starting block. When I open up a PDF file I do not see the “sign” command at the top of my toolbar. I have File, Edit, View, Document, Tools, Window, & Help. While writing this email to you I pulled down the Documents tab & “sign” was under there but gray. I have Adobe 9 & Windows 2010. What am I missing? To be able to do this would be sooo helpful. Thanks for putting this out!!
Susanne
Hi Susanne,
I’m so sorry you are having difficulty with the PDF instructions. First, make sure you have the most current version of Adobe Reader which is X (10) as of 8-4-12. Next, make sure you are opening the document in Adobe Reader. The “sign” tab is on the top right, not the top left near the “file, edit, view, window, and help” area. Hope that helps!
Hi! Thank you so much for sharing this information. I have a question. I am able to add text like you have taught us. However, I cannot figure out a quick way to correct something that I have typed. I have tried to double click the text but it will not let me change something that I’ve typed in. I have been able just by “dumb luck” but for the life of me cannot do it consistently. Is there an easier way? BTW-I haven’t saved the document yet.
Thank you so much for your help,
Cindy
Hi Cindy,
Deleting text is a little more tricky. It won’t let you just backspace and delete a few characters, you have to delete the entire word or sentence you typed. To delete an entire word, double click on the text and a gray box will appear around the text. Once you see the gray box then you can click delete to delete the entire word.
Hope that helps!
Thank you so much for your quick reply!
I have tried numerous times to delete by double clicking on the text. A few times the gray box will appear but for some strange reason it is not wanting to co-operate with me all of the time. Oh well, it must be a learning curve on my part and I will keep on trying. Thanks again for your help and I hope you have a great weekend!
Deleting is really tricky.
