Activities

Humpty Dumpty Hunt

Before                   After

(these two pictures are from 2 different years which is why they don't look exactly the same)

Materials: white posterboard, scissors, markers, band-aids.

Draw a large oval shape on white posterboard and cut it out.

Decorate the Humpty Dumpty shape with markers and place on your teaching easel or whiteboard.

Refer to Humpty Dumpty each time you sing the rhyme for two weeks.

The day before the end of your Humpty Dumpty unit, after the students have gone home, take the Humpty shape down and cut him into several pieces.

Next take the pieces and place them around the school in places like the library, the cafeteria, the principal's office etc.  Arrange with the librarian, cafeteria workers, and principal to play along with you first ;)

The next morning when the students enter the room refer to the Humpty Dumpty poster on the wall and exclaim "Oh my, where is my Humpty?", ask all the students if they have seen him.

Now move your hunt for Humpty out into the school building.

After you have found all the pieces take the children back to class and brainstorm ways to "fix" Humpty since he has broken.

Give each student a band-aid and ask them to come to the front and help you fix Humpty by bandaging him together.

Tip: Use novelty band-aids such as Dora or Arthur to add extra excitement.

Once Humpty is all better hang him back on the wall so the students will always remember their adventure of finding Humpty scattered around the school.

Humpty Dumpty

Materials:  white cardstock, red construction paper cut into strips, glue, scissors, crayons.

Copy an oval shape onto white cardstock, one per child.

Have students cut out ovals with scissors.

Next, cut the construction paper into 2 inch strips.

Accordion fold red strips of construction paper and glue 4 strips to oval for the arms and legs.

Decorate oval with crayons.

Large Humpty for acting out rhyme w/whole group

Materials: white posterboard, scissors, markers

Draw a large oval on the white posterboard using a marker.

Cut out the large oval and decorate with markers.

Use the scissors to cut a circle in the top of the oval where Humpty's face belongs.

Have each student come to the front and place his or her face through the hole, sit on a chair or cardboard bricks and act out the story as the rest of the class sings or chants the rhyme.

Small Humpty for acting out rhyme individually

Materials: white cardstock, scissors, markers or crayons.

Copy 4 white ovals on 8 1/2 x 11 sheets of white cardstock.

Have each student cut out one cardstock oval with scissors.

Have students decorate their ovals to resemble Humpty Dumpty.

Next, the teacher will cut two small holes at the bottom of each Humpty big enough for a children's fingers to fit through.

Students place index and middle finger through the holes in the bottom of Humpty Dumpty and act out the rhyme individually using tables or small blocks as the wall.

Humpty Dumpty Sequencing

Materials: Humpty Dumpty sequencing picture (click here), construction paper, crayons, scissors, glue.

The Best of the Mailbox Nursery Rhymes book has good sequencing pictures to reproduce for this rhyme.

Using 3 or 4 scene sequence pictures is a great way to check for understanding.  Have your students color the scenes, cut apart, and glue in the correct order on a piece of construction paper.

*TIP:  4 year olds may have difficulty sequencing 4 pictures until later in the school year, I try to stick with only 3 scene sequencing activities when working with 4 year olds.
