Here is a free printable that goes along with the classic story of The Mitten by Jan Brett. The first page has pictures of animals, some are from the story and some are not.
The second page is a t-chart that has picture cues at the top to support non-readers.
Students cut out the pictures of the animals and glue them to the correct side of the t-chart.
One side is titled “Characters in the story” and the other side is titled “Characters not in the story.”
This activity can be used to assess beginning comprehension skills as well as following directions and cutting.

Love the Mitten printable! My class loves Jan Brett books! 🙂
Thanks Ann, glad you like it. Jan Brett is one of my very favorite authors, I look forward to reading her books all year. I met her at NAEYC a few years ago and she is a lovely person, she has her own tour bus!
The Mitten is one of our greatest themes. I am doing it this week. I remember using something similar to this during Gingerbread week and am glad to get a copy of pictures for The Mitten, too. Thanks.
Thanks for stopping by Brenna, glad you can use it!
This is great and perfect timing. I just sitting down to find more actiivites for our mitten week, this week :). We are doing this book. Thanks so much!!!!
You are welcome Sami! Thanks for stopping by and I hope your students enjoy the activity 🙂
This was a great activity. I read a big book version of the Mitten to my class today. The children really enjoyed the story and the artwork. I told the class to really pay attention to the story and the different animals in the book. We did the activity after reading the book. It was very interesting to observe the children as they did the activity. Thank you!
I’m so glad your students enjoyed the activity Phyllis! Thanks for sharing your experience with us here!
I teach MD students and so the Mitten printable and T-chart are just perfect for my class. Thank you so much for sharing!
