Syllables Activity
Students identify the pictures and the number of syllables in each word. This activity is available in the Ocean Literacy Packet and includes a black and white recording sheet.
Beginning Sounds Activity
Students attach clothespins with letters to the pictures that have the corresponding beginning sounds. There is also a black and white recording sheet included with this activity. The beginning sounds activity is available in the Ocean Literacy Packet.
Rhyming Activity
Students will match rhyming coins to their treasure chest mats in this small group game available in the Ocean Literacy Packet.
Alphabet Identification Game
Both the upper and lower case versions of this game are available {black and white or color} in the Ocean Literacy Packet. Students will take turns drawing a card, identifying the letter, and marking it on their recording sheet. When the Thar she blows! card is drawn all the students say “Thar she blows!” This activity also includes two recording sheets, one for uppercase letters and one for lowercase letters.

Printable Fish Grid Game
Help young children build number sense with this fun, printable fish grid game. This game is available in the Building Number Sense with Grid Games packet.
Wax Resist Painting
Materials: Crayola crayons (NOT washable), blue watercolor paint, white construction paper.
Have students draw an ocean scene with crayons on white paper. Paint over the picture with a wash of blue watercolor.
Saltwater Painting
Materials: water, salt, food coloring, white construction paper, paintbrushes
Mix 1/4 C. warm water with 6-t. salt and 3 drops of food coloring in each jar. Have students paint pictures with the water and salt mixture. The water will evaporate leaving colored “sand.”
