The Little Red Hen Song

(tune: Mulberry Bush)

This is the way I plant the seed,
Plant the seed,
Plant the seed,
This is the way I plant the seed,

So early in the morning.

Repeat using the following verses:
...cut the wheat
...go to the mill
...make the dough
...bake the bread
...eat the bread

Activities

Activity Instructions

Bread Tasting Graph

Materials:  white bread, wheat bread, butter, napkins, plastic knife, chart paper, markers.

Prepare a graph in advance using the chart paper, draw a white bread shape on the top right hand side and a wheat bread shape (color it brown) on the top left.  Have students taste the wheat and the white bread and then write their names on the chart under the appropriate picture.   Discuss the results during large group and post on the wall.

Act out the story

Materials: sentence strips, construction paper (various colors), apron, scissors, glue sticks, story props (wheat, bread, windmill, wheelbarrow etc).

Use the sentence strips to make headbands for the "actors" to wear.  Cut two triangle ears and glue to a sentence strip to make a cat headband.  Cut two long, floppy ears from brown construction paper and glue to a sentence strip to make a dog headband.  Use orange construction paper cut in the shape of a duck's  bill and glue to the front of the headband to make a goose headband.  The little red hen will wear an apron for a costume.  You can cut yellow construction paper into strips and bundle the strips to create wheat props.

Compare and Contrast

Materials:  Xerox copies of the front of several different Little Red Hen stories, glue stick, chart paper, markers.

Xerox the front cover of several Little Red Hen books.  Shrink the copies so they will all fit at the top of your chart paper.  Glue the copies to the top of the chart and use the markers to make the lines for a graph.  Show the students the actual books and have a discussion comparing and contrasting the stories.  Have the students write their names under their favorite Little Red Hen story and review the results in large group.  Post the chart on the wall for future reference.

Story Sequence

Materials: Copy of Little Red Hen Fairy Tale Sequence (click here), construction paper cut hot dog style, crayons, scissors, glue.

Have students color the pictures for the story sequence, cut, and glue in the correct sequence on the construction paper.  While I am not a big fan of worksheets this activity can be good tool to measure how well your students understand the sequence of the story and follow directions.
