Prepare a graph in advance using the chart paper, draw a white bread shape on the top right hand side and a wheat bread shape (color it brown) on the top left. Have students taste the wheat and the white bread and then write their names on the chart under the appropriate picture. Discuss the results during large group and post on the wall.

Act Out the Story

Materials: sentence strips, construction paper (various colors), apron, scissors, glue sticks, story props (wheat, bread, windmill, wheelbarrow etc) OR use the book Retelling Tales to create the headbands.
Use the sentence strips to make headbands for the “actors” to wear. Cut two triangle ears and glue to a sentence strip to make a cat headband. Cut two long, floppy ears from brown construction paper and glue to a sentence strip to make a dog headband. Use orange construction paper cut in the shape of a duck’s bill and glue to the front of the headband to make a goose headband. The little red hen will wear an apron for a costume. You can cut yellow construction paper into strips and bundle the strips to create wheat props.

Compare and Contrast
Materials: copies of the front of several different Little Red Hen stories, glue stick, chart paper, markers.
Copy the front cover of several different Little Red Hen books. Shrink the copies so they will all fit at the top of your chart paper. Glue the copies to the top of the chart and use the markers to make the lines for a graph. Show the students the actual books and have a discussion comparing and contrasting the stories.
