Instructions
Transportation Upper/Lower Matching

Setting: Small Group, Literacy Centers

Objective: Upper and lowercase letter identification/matching

Materials: Transportation accents, magnetic letters, Sharpie marker, laminating film

Directions:  Write uppercase letters on the transportation accents with a Sharpie marker. Laminate the accents for durability. Place magnetic letters in a bowl or basket in the middle of the table so they are easily accessible to all students.  Students will select a transportation mat and find the corresponding lowercase letter to match.

Transportation Sentences 1

Setting: Small Group, Literacy Centers

Objective: Sight Word Recognition

Materials: magnetic letters, transportation sentence mats, laminating film

Directions:  Give each student in the small group a transportation sentence mat.  Students will use magnetic letters to spell sight words that make sense in the blanks.

Transportation Sight Word Mats

Setting: Small Group, Literacy Centers

Objective: Sight Word Recognition

Materials: magnetic letters, Sharpie Marker, laminating film, transportation accents

Directions:  Write a different focus sight word on each of the transportation accents with a Sharpie marker.  Laminate the accents for durability.  Place magnetic letters in a bowl or basket in the middle of the table so they are easily accessible to all students. Students will spell the sight words out on the mats with magnetic letters.

Transportation Word Families

Setting: Small Group, Literacy Centers

Objective: Word Families

Materials: construction paper, word family tran mats (see left), Sharpie marker, laminating film, train die-cuts

Directions:  Laminate multi-colored construction paper.  Create several word family train mats like pictured at left using word families your students are familiar with.  Die-cut matching train cars using the laminated construction paper.  Use your Sharpie marker to write the word family words on the train cars.  Students will locate the words and place them on the correct word family trains.

Transportation Sentences 2

Setting: Small Group, Literacy Centers

Objective: Sight Word Recognition

Materials: Sentence strips, Sharpie marker, transportation clip-art or stickers

Directions:  Write several simple transportation sentences on sentence strips using a Sharpie marker.  Include clip-art or stickers next to the unknown word.  Cut the sentences apart and place in envelopes.  Give each student in your small group an envelope.  Students will construct the sentences using their knowledge of sight words.  Remind them to create sentences that "make sense".

Transportation Board Game

Setting: Small Group, Math Centers

Objective: 1:1, Number Sense

Materials: Cardstock, sticky dots, transportation stickers, tape, thematic playing pieces, one foam die

Directions:  Take two pieces of white cardstock and tape them together in the middle to create your game board.  Be careful to leave a small gap between the two pieces of cardstock so the game board will fold easily for storage.  Place thematic stickers around the board for decoration. Affix the round sticky dots to the game board and laminate.  Give each player a playing piece (see resources section).  Players take turns rolling the die and moving their playing piece.

Transportation Counting Book

Setting: Small Group, Math Centers

Objective: concepts of print, number sense, number identification

*This is a crossover activity meaning it integrates literacy and math*

Materials: Transportation stickers, "I Can See" Transportation Counting booklet- one per child.

Directions:  Students "read" the sentences on each page using their knowledge of numbers and sight words.  Students place the appropriate number of stickers on each page.

Transportation Path Game

Setting: Small Group, Math Centers

Objective: Number Recognition, 1:1

Materials: Do-A-Dot markers, transportation path game sheet, number cards

Directions:  Give each child a transportation path game sheet and a Do-A-Dot marker.  Place the number cards in the middle of the table in a basket or container.  Each child takes turns selecting a number card from the container.  The child identifies the number and then marks it on his paper with his Do-A-Dot marker.

Transportation Counting 1-5

Setting: Small Group, Math Centers

Objective: 1:1 correspondence

Materials: 1-5 counting grid- one per child (available in printables section below), transportation stickers

Directions:  Give each child in the small group a counting grid sheet.  Place the stickers in the center of the table in a container so all students can easily reach them.  The students will place the correct number of stickers next to each number on the counting grid.

Transportation Patterning

Setting: Small Group, Math Centers

Objective: Patterning

Materials: pattern grid sheet (see printables section below), transportation stickers

Directions:  Give each child in the small group one patterning grid.  Place the stickers in the center of the table in a container so all students can easily reach them.  The students will use the stickers to create a pattern.

Transportation 1:1

Objective: 1:1 correspondence

Materials: Transportation 1:1 mats- one per student in small group (see printables section below), Do-A-Dot markers (see resources section below)

Directions:  Students take turns rolling the die, identifying the corresponding number on their paper and stamping that number with a Do-A-Dot marker.

Truck Roll 'N Stamp

Setting:  Small Group, Math Centers

Objectives: Number recognition, number sense, one-to-one

Materials: foam die, 1-6 truck game sheet (see printables section below), Do-A-Dot markers (see resources section below)

Instructions:  Students take turns rolling the die, identifying the corresponding number on their paper and stamping that number with a Do-A-Dot marker.

Fun Activities

Activity Instructions

Magic Stop Sign

Materials:  fingerpaint paper, red paint, paint brushes, scissors, masking tape.

Take one large piece of fingerpaint paper for each child.  Using the scissors cut strips of masking tape and stick the tape to the paper to spell out the word "Stop".   Have students paint their papers with red paint all over, completely covering the masking tape.  When the paint is dry you can carefully peel the tape off to reveal the word "Stop".  Use the scissors to cut the paper into a stop sign shape.   The same idea could be used to make "yield" and other traffic signs.

Shape Train

Materials: construction paper- various colors, scissors, glue stick, crayons.

Have the students cut out various shapes (rectangles, circles, squares, etc) and glue together to make a part of a train.  They can use crayons to write their names on the side of the train.  When everybody is finished, assemble the "name train" on the wall in the classroom or on a bulletin board.  Make sure to make one for yourself and place it in front :)

Fingerpaint Tracks

Materials: several matchbox cars or other small cars with moveable wheels, fingerpaint, fingerpaint paper or butcher paper, paint- various colors.

Place several different colors of paint in bowls or pie tins, containers need to be big enough for the cars to sit in.  Next, give each student a sheet of fingerpaint paper OR use a large sheet of butcher paper to make a class mural.  "Drive" the cars in the paint and across the paper to create tracks.

Transportation Graph

Materials:  Butcher paper, construction paper, crayons, glue.

Create a graph using the butcher paper with a place for each form of transportation (car, truck, train, airplane etc).  Give each student a square of construction paper and them to draw their favorite form of transportation and write their name.  When finished, students glue their pictures on the graph in the appropriate place.

Traffic Light

Materials:  red, yellow, green, and black construction paper, glue, scissors.

Have students cut red, yellow, and green circles for the traffic lights.  Next, have them cut one large black rectangle and glue the circles on in the appropriate order to create a traffic light.

Shape Sail Boat

Materials: blue and white construction paper, crayons, glue, scissors.

Have students cut triangles with the white paper.  Next, ask them to glue the triangles on the blue paper to make the sail.  Use the crayons to make the boat body and other features on the blue paper.
