Animal Shelter Service Learning Project and Mini Dramatic Play Kit
This kit provides an original article about the importance of developing empathy and altruism from a young age. Also included are suggestions for ways you can support the development of these important skills in your classroom through service learning projects. You will find everything you need to start a supply drive for your local animal shelter in your classroom or school. You can even support empathy and altruism in the dramatic play center using the free printables included.
Don’t think you have time for service learning projects? Don’t think your at-risk students need to participate? Think again! These misconceptions are addressed on the blog HERE.
This free kit was developed as a tribute to my two rescue dogs who passed away. You can download the kit for free at the bottom of this page, all I ask in return is that you share the link to this page on Facebook or twitter, Pin it, or e-mail the link to your friends if you find it useful.

My husband, past Volunteer of the Year for our city and an animal lover has written thousands of descriptions for animals at our local animal shelter. He graciously wrote the descriptions for the three cats and three dogs included in this kit.
The Keep Calm and Love Cats sign is included in the kit. You can put it on the wall in your dramatic play center or it fits perfectly in the plastic frame from IKEA pictured above. There is also a Keep Calm and Love Dogs sign included, pictured below.
Finding age-appropriate books about animal rescue and shelters for young children can be a challenge. I highly recommend the three books pictured above. They are:
- Lucky by Gus Clarke
- Before You Were Mine by Maribeth Boelts
- The Dog Who Belonged to No One by Amy Hest
There are five different signs included in this packet that can be used to label your supply collection boxes.
I also have a set of free, printable pet collars that could be used with this play theme, you can find them HERE.
