Literacy Beginnings Book Study Blog Party

There are some people who think teachers have three months off and it’s all one big party; but teachers know the reality is much different. Being a lifelong learner is an important part of being a teacher. If you’re anything like me you have a big stack of professional development books sitting on your nightstand just itching to be read. It’s also just as important to take some time for yourself each summer to recharge your batteries for the next school year, it’s all about balance.

I can’t find the time to read professional development books during the school year so I usually select a few to read each summer. Of course, reading said books while laying in the sun and sipping a cold beverage is the best of both worlds. This summer I decided to read the following professional development books:

(Don’t you just love my quilt in the background?)

One thing I always felt was lacking from my summer professional reading was interaction with my peers. Wouldn’t it be great to discuss the book with other teachers? After reading about the book study blog party Mrs. Wills is hosting for Math Work Stations the solution was clear; I am officially announcing a book study blog party for Literacy Beginnings! {Hugs to Mrs. Wills for inspiring this awesome idea!}

My goals for creating the Literacy Beginnings book study are:

  • To promote one of my passions as an early childhood educator; best practices in early literacy instruction.
  • To encourage professional dialogue and collegiality between early childhood teachers.

Here’s how the book study blog party for Literacy Beginnings will work:

  • Starting June 27, 2011 (this will allow everybody who wants to participate to get a copy of the book) there will be a series of linky parties hosted by different bloggers.
  • Each week a different section of the book will be discussed on participating blogs.
  • The blogger that is hosting will provide their thoughts on the chapter and readers can leave comments with their thoughts and ideas as well as link up their posts relating to the topic using the linky.

Here’s how you can participate:

  1. Make sure you have the book Literacy Beginnings by Fountas and Pinnell
  2. If you are a blogger and would like to host a chapter of the Literacy Beginnings book study blog party please contact me using the contact tab above.
  3. Stay tuned to the Pre-K Pages blog and I will announce the bloggers who will be hosting each chapter and the dates they will be hosting.
  4. Leave a comment below if you are interested in discussing the book with others and what you would like to learn.

I look forward to reading and learning with you! You can read samples from Literacy Beginnings here.

All of the authors mentioned in this post have other titles that I also highly recommend. The Literacy Beginnings book study blog party is not affiliated with, sponsored or endorsed in any way by Fountas and Pinnell or Heinemann. I have not been paid to promote this book or the publisher.

If you enjoy visiting Pre-K Pages please click the “Like” button at the top of any page or share it via other social media outlets using the links below.

  1. This seems RIGHT up my alley. I loved the preview. Can’t wait to start the book. HOWEVER, the day you start – I will be on a cruise. Can I just join in on the 2nd session or do you think this will be a problem? I am very interested and this will be a first for me – via blog, that is.

  2. Hi Amanda, I’m so excited that you will be joining us! The beauty of a book study blog party is that you can read the posts any time you want to 🙂 Just make sure you’re following all the participating blogs by e-mail or reader service and go on your cruise and have fun 🙂 When you get back you can read all the posts and comments from the blog party and catch up on what you missed.

  3. Awesome! I was sitting here last night trying to decide which books to start, so this is just the kick I needed! I’ll be starting my second year teaching preschool in September, so honestly I am happy to learn pretty much all there is to learn.

BTW, I love your site. I referenced it a lot over the past year. Thank you for all the great resources you share!

  4. I would like to join in! I work in a private preschool that has a UPK class for the local school district. We were recently given this book by the school district. I have only glanced at it and am excited to hear what others think of it.

  5. I just bought this book! I am really looking forward to it. I am also reading Already There by Katie Wood Ray if anyone is interested and would like to discuss it.

  6. Awesome idea! I would love to participate! I actually have looked at getting Literacy Beginnings before now I have a reason to commit to reading it. I can’t wait.

  7. Hi,
Thanks for helping me get started with my summer. I would like to take this one step further before we start. Can we agree to “meet again” once the school year starts so that we can support one another in actual practice? As teachers we can believe we have great ideas and be excited to bring them to our students but often times, it is our students who come up with truly wonderful moments as we hand the responsibility of learning over to them. I am looking forward to this learning journey.

  8. I can’t wait! I just love getting to learn from such an uplifting and inspiring community of astoundingly professional educators. *sigh* 🙂

I am still not computer savy, but I want to join too! WHAT a GREAT IDEA!!! Thank you!!!!

  10. Such a fantastic idea! I’m a teaching student in South Australia and I too have a stack of books fresh out of their Amazon box waiting to be read (after my assignmentsare finished!). Guess what was top of my pile – Literacy Beginnings! And not too far down, Maths Stations. Will mention this link to the other students in course as sure many others will be interested in following/participating. Your actions remind me of one of Teacher Tom’s recent posts – http://teachertomsblog.blogspot.com/2011/06/this-is-way-we-will-change-world.html?sms_ss=facebook&at_xt=4deb782ed44460ab%2C0

  11. I am really looking forward to this. I received the book a couple of weeks ago because I am trying to decide if it would be an appropriate text for a class I am teaching on Emergent Literacy Development. It would great to be able to discuss the book with others to get a range of perspectives.

  12. I would also like to join. I ordered the book today. I am currently working on my doctorate in early childhood and this should go well with the curriculum and assessment course I am taking this summer!

  13. Thanks everybody! I’m thrilled with the response to the book study, I’m so glad you will all be joining us!

    Happy Reading 🙂

  14. @Nichole I am so honored and flattered that you compared me to Teacher Tom, he is a master blogger and I can only aspire to be the kind of blogger/writer he is! I think we all have a big part to play in the ECE world, each of us has a slightly interpretation but we are all equally important 🙂

    Happy Reading!

  15. Can’t wait to get my book!
Thank you for doing this. I look forward to reading more blogs on this book.

  17. I’ve had the book for a month now. So much to review! I’d love to join your blog. I am actually leaving the classroom this year in hopes to start my own private enrichment program for early childhood at home.

  18. I would love to join. This will be my second year to teach preschool and I am excited to learn what works best.

  19. Next year I will be teaching Pre-K, so I ordered Literacy Beginnings about a week ago to help me get started. I’m so excited you’re doing a book study! I can’t wait…

  20. Just got this book about 2 weeks ago, have only read the first 2 chapters, but I am looking forward to the book study!

  21. Got my book today in the email…..thanks for giving me the push to get this book. I had thought about getting it earlier this spring. I am looking forward to reading it and everyones comments as well. I read the “In Pictures and In Words” this past fall. It was wonderful, and I was able to implement some of her ideas in my writers workshop lessons this spring. I think you will really like it.

I am excited about this book study! This book was just ordered for all of our district’s preschool teachers and I am working this summer with colleagues on curriculum writing using this book and the OWL curriculum. I am so excited!

  23. I just started reading this book and I think it’s just what I’ve been looking for!!! I am moving down to Kindergarten after many years in Grade 1! How do I participate?
