Welcome to Pre-K Pages!

I’m Vanessa Levin, a curriculum writer, early childhood teacher, consultant, public speaker, and author. I help busy Pre-K and Preschool teachers plan effective and engaging lessons, create fun, playful learning centers, and gain confidence in the classroom.

Spring is in the air and the flowers are blooming in this dramatic play flower shop!

Transforming your dramatic play center into a flower shop in preschool or kindergarten can support early learning standards by providing your students with literacy, math, and writing opportunities.

Finding Flowers for the Dramatic Play Flower Shop

If buying fake flowers in bulk isn’t in your budget, consider asking each student in your class to bring in one artificial flower. Even if only half your class brings in flowers you will have more than enough to start your own flower shop.

Goodwill and other thrift stores are also great places to buy these items. I found the cute little market stand pictured at the top for a song on Craigslist and the flower bag came from the dollar section of my local craft store.

Fine Motor Flower Activity

To add a little fine motor practice, I dug up some coffee cans I had stashed away in my garage for just such an occasion. Next, I typed labels and attached them to the cans with tape. Then, I used a pair of sharp scissors to poke holes in the lids. Finally, I used a pair of wire snips to separate the flowers from the bunch.

Students can place the flowers in the correct cans by sticking the stems through the holes in the lids. A little sorting and fine motor practice all rolled into one!

How to Make a Florist Apron

I bought this child-sized apron pictured below at my local craft store for a few dollars (use those coupons!) and added my own image using printable t-shirt transfers. This is super easy; you just insert an image or type text into your document and print it out on the t-shirt transfer paper. Iron the transfer on the apron and you’re good to go.

Read the directions carefully or you’ll end up with some faded areas like mine.

Mother’s Day Bouquets

Provide your students with some tissue paper and ribbon and they can wrap and tie their very own bouquets for more fine motor practice. They will love addressing and signing the printable flower delivery cards too.

Cards for Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day, Birthday, and Congratulations are included in the Dramatic Play Flower Shop kit, but don’t worry, I’ve created a freebie Get Well card for you below!
