Pool Noodle Syllable Caterpillar

Syllable Caterpillar with Pool Noodles for #preschool and #kindergarten

This literacy game focusing on syllables is so easy to make and the total cost is only a few bucks. Young children learn best through fun, hands-on activities where they manipulate three-dimensional objects.

When teaching academic skills it’s important to provide pre-k and kindergarten students with playful activities that make learning fun and engaging. Students will learn more and stay on task for longer periods of time if they are actively engaged.

Supplies

  • Wooden Spoon {Dollar Store}
  • Pool Noodles {Dollar Store}
  • Permanent Marker
  • Wiggly Eyes
  • Pipe Cleaner
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Knife

The pool noodles were one dollar each and the wooden spoons came in a package of three for a dollar. I already had a marker, wiggly eyes, a glue gun, and pipe cleaners on hand so the cost for this project came in at a whopping $4. I also have tons of pool noodles left over and two more spoons. You could just draw the caterpillar’s eyes with your marker instead of using the wiggly eyes but I think they add a little something extra so I went with them.

How to Assemble the Pool Noodle Syllable Caterpillar

Start by cutting a few pieces of pool noodle with the knife. Next, cut a small piece of pipe cleaner and use the glue gun to attach it to the back of the spoon, or caterpillar’s “face.” Then, glue the wiggly eyes to the front of the spoon. Use your marker to draw the caterpillar’s nose and mouth. That’s it!

How to Use This Literacy Game

Gather your small group and show them pictures of items that have 1-3 syllables. I like to use the pictures from the Sorting Sounds book by Teach Bright but you could use any pictures.

Next, introduce the caterpillar to your group and explain his purpose. Show the students a picture card, have them identify the picture, then ask them to tell you how many pieces to place on the caterpillar’s body as they listen to the syllables in the word.

Say the syllables aloud as you place each piece on the spoon. When the correct number of pieces are on the caterpillar ask, “Is that right?” then touch each piece as you say the word again.

Finally, let the students take turns choosing a card and placing the pool noodles on the wooden spoon as they say the syllables aloud. The other children in the small group can clap the syllables or count them on their fingers while waiting for their turn, or you could make one caterpillar per child.
