Welcome to Pre-K Pages!

I’m Vanessa Levin, a curriculum writer, early childhood teacher, consultant, public speaker, and author. I help busy Pre-K and Preschool teachers plan effective and engaging lessons, create fun, playful learning centers, and gain confidence in the classroom.

Here’s a quick tip for you to use in your play dough center.

Are you tired of the sticky residue that play dough leaves behind on your tables? Or how about those play dough mats that curl up and fall apart after lots of use?

I found something that is super durable and will protect your tables from play dough, keep reading to find out my secret!

Cheap Play Dough Mats

Linoleum floor tiles make great play dough mats and can be purchased individually for a dollar or less at your local home improvement store.

How to Use Floor Tiles as Play Dough Mats

I found the tiles pictured here on sale at my local home improvement store for .99 cents. Each child can have his or her own tile to use in the play dough center.

Having a tray or mat for each child helps contain the play dough crumbs and defines their play area.

These tiles can also be used for any type of messy project. I don’t recommend using ceramic or other types of tiles that can break.

Although they look like real tiles, the tiles pictured here are actually flexible linoleum. What a cool invention! These tiles had peel and stick backing so I peeled off the paper and added regular construction paper to the back of each tile.

If you’re feeling brave you can even ask your home improvement store if they have any discontinued or leftover linoleum tiles they would be willing to donate to your classroom.
