Ideas for using Easi-Speak in the classroom:

Make Your Own Audio Books

make your own audio books with easi speak digital recorder
Several years ago I switched my listening center from individual cassette players to iPod shuffles. I used a headphone/microphone set connected to my computer and the free, open source software called Audacity. Using these tools I recorded my own voice reading so I could provide my students with more book and audio selections. The Easi-Speak makes recording your own audio books to use in the classroom a piece of cake.

Record Students Singing

I made this video using audio clips of the students singing in the classroom. I had them sing into the microphone that was attached to the computer. The recording process was kind of awkward because I had to sit at my desk in front of the computer- not something most pre-k teachers do often! The Easi-Speak would make this process much easier and I could travel around the room freely and have students sing into the microphone while they are at centers. (The video was created with permission from HeidiSongs and written consent from each child’s parents)

Supporting Oral Language and Writing with the Easi-Speak

using the easi speak digital recorder for writing
The Easi-Speak supports oral language development and provides motivation during interactive writing by allowing you to record and play back messages from the students. I’m constantly repeating the message as we write it together, but with the Easi-Speak I can just push the play button and the students can listen to the recording made by their classmate.

Disclosure: I received a complimentary Easi-Speak to review, I was not compensated in any other way. All opinions are 100% my own.

  1. Hi, This microphone looks like so much fun. I work in after school with first and second graders. We are a year round program so on breaks the children are with me from 8 till 6. All 18 speak a lanugage other than English at home. I have been trying to find audio books in Spanish on line that are not very expensive. With this I could have parents read the story and record it. I switched to an Ipod from CDs because it allows us to change the music. I have not thought of individual ipods. That is a great idea.
    Thanks. Rita

  2. I would LOVE one of these! I have several pre-readers only just now practicing the relationship between letters and groups of letters and the sounds that they make. This tool would be brilliant for rhyme games and letter-sound associations!

  3. I LOVE this microphone! The possibilities are endless. I’m thinking it will be a great tool for ESL kiddos and even the kids with speech issues. Love it, love it, love it!

  4. I would love this device because of the freedom it allows being cordless, and the “no batteries” is exciting too. We could use it in circle to encourage those quiet children and the more vocal ones to sing together and produce something they would share with the group as “star” performers.

This easi-speak recorder would be absolutely great for our Interactive writing in Kindergarten. I also would love to use it for reading fluency at guided reading. Students would really benefit from listening to themselves read to encourage better fluency and expression. Thanks for recommending this great product!

  6. I would love to record my own audiobooks for our listening center. At our Open House it would be terrific to have parents read a book for students to listen to while they are at school. It would also be great to record and store students speech throughout the year!

  7. Thanks for the opportunity to win one of the Easi-Speak microphone/recorders. I know I would find reasons to use it daily in my developmental preschool. I can see it used at circle time, in centers, with stories, during speech therapy…. keeping my fingers crossed! ~Denise

  8. I think this microphone would be a wonderful resource in the classroom. We could use it to make our own class books into audio books.

I like how easy it is to use and that it is wireless. The audio books idea is great!
    Thanks

  10. Oh the possibilities! There are so many things I could do woth this! The first would be to make recordings of our favorite books for take home packs. What an easy to promote literacy in homes without books or with parents who don’t feel comfortable reading to their children

  11. I would love to use it for audio books, but also use it for my children with speech issues. What a great learning tool!

  12. I would use the Easi-Speak every day to have the children read the books that they are practicing reading. Currently I have them read into a tape recorder. They would really love the microphone and it would be so much easier!

  13. I would love to have one of these in my prek class! The majority of the children in my class are ESL and this would be a great resource for us!

  14. Would love to win this! The possibilities of use are many, but one is recording instructions for a learning center to provide more independence for a preschooler, and another use is that it would be a great tool for recording anecdotal notes. This wireless device would make it a cinch! 🙂 Thanks for the giveaway!

  15. I have played with the idea of digital story making, but had a hard time finding a microphone that could be easily moved and pick up all the kids voices. This microphone would fit the bill! and after listening to your sight word song video, I can see how motivating it would be for the students too!

  16. Thanks for posting this! What a great product! I would use it during circle time and for audio books.

  17. I would love to use this microphone when we are writing stories about the field trips we go on. I could record their stories for them to listen to and then make a CD for each child that goes with all the stories in their journals.

  18. I love the whole idea of this microphone! I could use it with my Pre-Kinders in sooooooo many different ways. I would love to make some audiobooks, as well as record my students singing and reading their own stories. This would be an awesome resource for our classroom! <3

Wow…I can think of so many ways that this could be used in our preschool classroom. I could see it as very motivating to students as they share thoughts and ideas with their classmates, but it could also help them with turn taking as they pass the microphone to another child to speak. It would be useful to me as a documentation tool…..being able to quote verbatim a comment that a child made for observations.

  20. i would feel so cool, using this!! I’m late to the “techi” world so it would be such an asset to my program to have the use of this. it looks and sounds easy enough for “even me!!”

  21. I love that the children could use it and use different voices to retell and record stories. And the best…. is NO BATTERIES!!

Thanks for the post! This would be a wonderful addition to our headstart classroom. I could assess children in circle, during free choice and during shared reading/writing. We are so limited in funds and materials in our program. This would allow us to accomplish so much. I could also use this with my youngest child, who has limited language abilities. So excited!

  23. I think this would be so much fun to use in the preschool classroom because young students love to hear themselves recorded. Plus, I would love to be able to record my own audio books for students to listen to in our classroom.

  24. This seems like a great addition to a classroom. I love the idea of recording my own audio books. It will also save a lot of nmoney in the long run…

  25. I would love to use this to show both reading fluency by keeping digital files of a student’s oral reading throughout the year. It would also be helpful when tracking speaking skills and vocabulary development in students. I also love the idea of making your own books on tape, but being this easy I may be able to convince different school or community people to record some as well.

  26. My youngest child (4 yr) has problems articulating, this would help him to hear that he isn’t saying things the way he thinks. 🙂 We just started speech therapy through our school district–this could help us at home!

this could the breakthru we need. I work with pre-school age kids, some with apraxia of speech. Others with delays in speech developments. A tool like this is so interactive and spontanious. Looks easy to use. Oh, how we would put it to good use.

  28. I teach developmentally delayed preschoolers, most of whom are non-verbal. A device such as this would help to ‘give them a voice,’ in response to questions asked, and would enable them to greet their peers and teachers along with the signs they are learning.. I love it!

  29. I love to sing and we do a lot of that in my classroom. I would love to be able to record the pre-schoolers!

  30. This would really benefit my shy or extremely soft spoken students. What a great idea for to encourage their language development and allow them to hear and practice articulation.

  31. I would love to use the Easi-Speak in so many ways. We do singing programs for the parents. Using Easi-Speak would encourage the children to sing where they can be heard. Children could read their readers, record, and listen to themselves. Other children could listen to each other. The listening center idea sounds like a dream come true. I teach kindergarten in a poor community and money is hard to come by.
Thanks for introducing me to this great product. Melissa

  32. The Easi-Speak would be a great tool for the students to hear their own stories. I love that it has no batteries!

I think the Easy Speak Recorder would be a fantastic asset in any classroom. I like the possiblity of making more audio books available to my students. I would also love to use the Easy Speak Recorder to collect data for fluency on my students.

  34. Thank you for introducing me to the Easi-Speak. I’ve also been using mp3 players w/ Audacity and I am thrilled to hear about an easier, more kindergarten friendly way to teach fluency and listening skills. I can’t wait to get my hands on one!

  35. I learning how to incorporate my students sound and pictures onto activities to play on the Smart Board in our computer room. I know this would be so awesome to add to our system. The children love hearing them on these devices. Teaching in a small catholic school, we love to get this to enhance our program. So excited to know it is out there.

  36. As always~another wonderful resource/idea shared. This site is amazing. My DLL’s would really put this one to good use.

  37. I would love to be able to digitally record books with my voice. That way my students would have more choice of books that are current to our classroom projects.

  38. I love the idea of recording books for my PreK students to listen to. I am also teaching a summer school program this summer and I think it would be a great tool to use with the students who are struggling with their reading fluency.

Looks like a great tool! I am most excited about recording books! Although, recording the kids singing would be so much fun too!!!
