Many of you may already be familiar with Scholastic’s magazine for preschoolers. I am a long time subscriber to this classroom magazine because the simple text, large, colorful photographs, and easy to understand information is very appealing to young children.

My Big World with Clifford Subscription
A subscription to My Big World with Clifford includes 16 issues per school year that are delivered in sets of two per month eight times during the school year. I’m excited to announce that this magazine has a fresh new look and a brand new name, My Big World with Clifford.
Along with the makeover, some new features have been added that I want to make you aware of. Just telling you about these new and improved features wouldn’t be enough because they are digital- and you know how much I love my technology! Check out the video below to learn more about the on-line companion resources now available at My Big World.
My Big World with Clifford Digital Features
I love how these digital features can be used in a whole group setting with a computer and projector, or independently at a computer station. But wait, I know what you’re thinking! What about iPads, right? Currently, the videos and some of the other digital features are flash based, which is not supported on the iPad. Don’t worry; I’ve got your back!
Did you know there are apps that will allow you to view flash on the iPad? My favorite app for this purpose is called Puffin. Just install the app, then open the app and go to the My Big World with Clifford page to enjoy all the digital features.
Funding Sources
Now you’re probably wondering how you can fund the purchase of My Big World with Clifford for your class, right? (I’m psychic!) Here’s the good news, there are a couple of ways you can secure funding. Of course, the good old fashioned way is to have the parents pay for it. Having worked exclusively in Title 1 schools this was never an option for me so my subscriptions have been funded through Title 1. Scholastic has provided a helpful funding page that lists Title 1 correlations. You will be pleased to know that you can also write a Donor’s Choose grant to fund the purchase of My Big World with Clifford for your class.

Supporting Academic Skills with My Big World
Some of you may be wondering how My Big World with Clifford supports academic skills such as language development, phonological awareness, or math. Scholastic provides a very helpful document detailing the different domains and the skills supported through the use of this publication. Each magazine features plenty of photographs and facts which support the Common Core Standards and the emphasis on non-fiction text and text features.
Teacher Issue
In addition to all of the cool digital features I describe in the video, each child gets his or her own paper copy of the magazine and there is a big issue included for the teacher. The big issue is giant sized so you can use it for large group lessons. I also used mine as posters in the science center when applicable or in the middle of a bulletin board. You can share the magazine with your class in a whole group setting and they can follow along, or you can make it a teacher directed, small group activity for your center rotations.
Visit the Scholastic website, Twitter and Facebook page to learn more about their educational resources for young children.
