DIY Tissue Paper Banners

Welcome to Pre-K Pages!

I’m Vanessa Levin, a curriculum writer, early childhood teacher, consultant, public speaker, and author. I help busy Pre-K and Preschool teachers plan effective and engaging lessons, create fun, playful learning centers, and gain confidence in the classroom.

Cinco de mayo is coming up soon so I thought I would share this super easy craft with you. Have you ever made snowflakes from coffee filters? Making tissue paper banners, or papel picado, is very similar. You can use these colorful banners to decorate your classroom.

How to Make a Tissue Paper Banner

Use the pictures above as a visual guide to help you follow the steps. First, start with a full sheet of tissue paper, then fold once in the middle so you have one long rectangle. Next, turn the rectangle so the fold is at the top and cut the tissue paper in half starting at the bottom and going up.

Now, take one of the halves and fold it accordion style starting with the fold at the top. Once your paper is folded accordion style, snip small triangles from the bottom. You can get as fancy or go as simple as you want when it comes to the cutting. When you’re finished cutting your design, unfold and repeat until you have enough to make a banner of your desired length. If you do the accordion folding your students can snip the designs.

These colorful tissue paper banners look great hanging in the classroom, hallway, or across a bulletin board. They can also be used as decorations for celebrating Cinco de Mayo.

I have created a new Mexican Restaurant Dramatic Play Kit that incorporates tissue paper banners and will help you “Say Olé to Dramatic Play”. Grab the picture below to learn more.
