How to Make Tissue Paper Flowers

Welcome to Pre-K Pages!

I’m Vanessa Levin, a curriculum writer, early childhood teacher, consultant, public speaker, and author. I help busy Pre-K and Preschool teachers plan effective and engaging lessons, create fun, playful learning centers, and gain confidence in the classroom.

Have you seen those colorful, puffy tissue paper flowers and thought they looked way too complicated to attempt on your own?

Today I’m going to show you how easy it is to make tissue paper flowers. You could use these to decorate your classroom centers for cinco de mayo or for a dramatic play Mexican restaurant.

Step-by-Step Guide to Make Easy Tissue Paper Flowers

Making tissue paper flowers is easy! Use the pictures above as a visual guide to help you create your flowers.

Step 1: Choose three large pieces of tissue paper. You can choose three coordinating colors or three of the same color.
Step 2: Align the three pieces of tissue paper on top of each other and begin folding them accordion style from the bottom. Make sure to press down and crease each fold as you go.
Step 3: When you are finished folding the paper you will have one, long thin strip of tissue paper. Press down and firmly crease the last section then fold the entire thing in half and tie in the middle with a piece of string or yarn. The third picture above illustrates this step.
Step 4: Take your scissors and cut through the folded end. The fourth picture above illustrates this step.
Step 5: Use your scissors to shape the edges on each end. You can round them, or fringe them, whatever you like.
Step 6: Starting on one side, gently begin separating the tissue paper layers and fluff up each layer as you go. See the finished flower at the top of this post.
