Have you ever tried to find inexpensive chair pockets that fit preschool or kindergarten chairs without breaking the bank or resorting to the dreaded S word (sewing)? It’s like searching for the Holy Grail, elusive and frustrating.
My aversion to sewing is no secret, I’m a card carrying and founding member of the “Anti-Sewing League” well documented by my No-Sew Felt Cake and my Pillow Case Curtains.
Cheap Classroom Chair Pockets
As usual, my quest began when I decided I had a problem that needed solving. My problem involved the storage of student writing folders. And I love coming up with teaching hacks that make my life easier and are a cheap alternative.
I wanted to cut down on the time it was taking for students to get their writing folders out and to minimize cross traffic in the classroom. Seat pockets are a logical solution to this problem.
First, I tried using a pillowcase idea I saw on Pinterest but even standard size pillow cases are much too long and wide for my little kid chairs.
Inexpensive Chair Pockets
Then, I saw this idea from Frugal Teacher using stretchy book covers. The chairs at the link were “big kid” chairs and I didn’t think the book covers would work on my little bitty chairs.
Since I wasn’t planning on stuffing the pockets full of books or supplies and they were only $1.00 I decided to give them a try.
I use colored table caddies for supply storage just in case you were wondering.
Affordable Chair Pockets
As you can see at the top, the stretchy book covers fit my little people chairs perfectly; I was thrilled!
Just turn one side of the stretchy book cover inside out and slip the other side over the back of the chair and you have instant seat pockets.
The stretchy book covers come in many colors and designs and can be found in the Back-to-School section of most big box stores like Target; I have also seen them at The Dollar Tree and CVS. I’m sure they can be found wherever back-to-school supplies are sold.
The folder that is stored in the seat pocket is just a simple two pocket folder.
