Fire Safety Literacy Activities for Preschoolers

Welcome to Pre-K Pages!

I’m Vanessa Levin, a curriculum writer, early childhood teacher, consultant, public speaker, and author. I help busy Pre-K and Preschool teachers plan effective and engaging lessons, create fun, playful learning centers, and gain confidence in the classroom.

Literacy skills are growing every day. No matter what concepts your preschoolers are developing–identifying letters, counting syllables, or discerning beginning sounds–you can provide fun activities with a fire safety theme. These are not just drills. These activities are hands-on fun to help your little learners master the skills where they are and move on up the literacy ladder! Oral language, vocabulary, and emerging reading skills are even more fun with a theme.

Fire Safety Theme Literacy Activities

Preschool Literacy with a Fire Safety Theme

Whether you’re looking for ideas for fire prevention week or community helpers you’re in the right place! If your preschoolers love fire trucks, fire stations and all things fire related then you need to add these fun activities to your lesson plans. Focus on skills development using these activities in your literacy small groups. Add activities to literacy and writing centers for independent exploration.

Alphabet Letter Matching

Find the cards with the same letters. At first, preschoolers can match uppercase letters to matching uppercase (or lowercase to lowercase). As they master finding letters that are the same, introduce matching uppercase to lowercase.  In the Fire Safety Bundle, two sets of alphabet cards are included–firefighter cards with letters and flame cards with letters (both in color and black and white).

Fire Prevention Rhyming Activity

Fire Safety Rhyming Game

Rhyming is an important part of developing phonological awareness. Students can begin to hear sounds in words and determine which sounds are the same and which are not. Do your kids need help learning how to identify rhyming words? They’ll love this fun whole group rhyming game! This game is available in the Fire Safety Bundle.

Firefighter Beginning Sounds Activity

Fire Safety Beginning Sounds Activity

Your kids will love this beginning sounds matching activity. Beginning sounds are an important part of developing phonological awareness skills. In this activity, students will identify the beginning sound of each picture inside the flame and match the flame sound pictures with the corresponding beginning letter. This beginning sounds activity is available in the Fire Safety Bundle.

Fire Syllable Clap and Count

Fire Safety Syllable Activity

This activity combines vocabulary development with syllable identification. Students identify the pictures and the number of syllables in each word, and then build towers using cubes to match the number of syllables in each word. This activity is available in the Fire Safety Bundle.

In another syllables game, preschoolers identify the picture and the number of syllables in each word. They roll the action cube and perform the corresponding number of actions. Then they place the picture card in the pocket chart underneath the correct number of fingers.

Fire Prevention Pocket Chart Sentences

Fire Safety Pocket Chart Sentences

The predictable text in this pocket chart set will help your students learn concepts of print such as left to right directionality, return sweep, one-to-one correspondence, and more. Help them point to the words as they read the chart. This activity is available in the Fire Safety Bundle.

Fire Prevention Word Cards

Fire Safety Word Cards

You can use these printable word cards to enhance vocabulary development in a pocket chart or on your word wall. These theme-related words and pictures will help students learn new words and build background knowledge for future reading and comprehension. These word cards are available in the Fire Safety Bundle.

Fire Theme Emergent Reader

Fire Safety Emergent Reader

The simple, predictable text in this book is designed to support your emergent readers. Use this book to reinforce concepts of print such as words are separated by spaces, left to right and top to bottom, written words match spoken words, common sight words, and more. The sentences in this reader match the pocket chart, reinforcing vocabulary and developing more word and letter recognition. This printable emergent reader is available in the Fire Safety Bundle.

Fire Theme read and write around the room

Fire Safety Read and Write Around the Room Activity

This fun activity will help reinforce letter or sight word recognition. Students locate words or letters written on the thematic cards around the room and write them on their recording sheet. Create cards that match your kids’ level of development. Instructions for setting up and using this activity are included in the Fire Safety Bundle.

Fire Safety Word Chart

Fire Safety Mini Word Chart

Use these mini word charts to support your emergent writers. Make the mini charts available to your students during independent writing time. Post a chart in your writing center and provide individual charts for students to use as needed. Both color and black and white versions are available for your convenience. The mini word charts are available in the Fire Safety Bundle.

Fire Safety Visual Discrimination Letter Activity

Fire Safety Visual Discrimination

These mats offer your little learners a variety of ways to practice visual discrimination skills, a pre-requisite for alphabet fluency. Recognizing how letter shapes are similar and different helps with letter identification and is foundational to seeing the differences in words later. Get your fire station mats in the Fire Safety Bundle.
